A few weeks ago I was cleared to start running again. Is the rehab over and can I pick up where I left off? Well, the answer on both fronts is a resounding NO! Basically, the rehab goes on as one reconditions the body to race again. As one gets older and injuries take longer to heal, slow and steady is the way back. Pay special attention to old injuries. Even though they have healed, they are areas that can be re-injured. When an old injury returns, it will take more work and time to heal.

Adding a goal such as a race at the end of the rehab stint can increase my motivation and make it easier to keep up with the exercise program to heal up. Be realistic, if you can’t start running for 6 weeks, then don’t set the race for the 8th week. Also, consult your doctor or physical therapist about when you can safely start training again.
